Cold Caps for Scalp Cooling

Hair loss has long been a distressing side effect of chemotherapy treatment. One potential strategy to mitigate this is scalp cooling, which aims to decrease the amount of chemotherapy drugs reaching the hair follicle cells. Research has shown that scalp hypothermia can be highly effective in preventing alopecia, with success rates of up to 90%.

Frozen gel caps have been effectively used in scalp hypothermia to prevent hair loss, but they have a limited lifespan. Additionally, precise temperature regulation with any degree of accuracy is nearly impossible. Vapor compression-based cooling systems, another technology have been developed to provide a consistent and controlled source of cooling. However, these scalp cryotherapy devices have some portability issues. They are often bulky and not easy to carry. This limits their usage scenarios, restricting patients to receiving treatment only in fixed locations. For patients who require treatment in different locations, this can pose an inconvenience. What’s more, the manufacturing costs of these cooling systems are relatively high, resulting in higher prices. This limits the widespread adoption of these devices, making this treatment method inaccessible to many patients.

To make scalp cooling a standard in chemotherapy, there is a need for a small, portable cooling unit that can provide the high levels of cooling required with precise temperature control and continuous operation, allowing patients to be mobile. Frequently approached by medical device companies who want to take advantage of MOIR’s miniature cooling expertise, MOIR has successfully established and customized various cooling and temperature control systems based on the 24V and 48V variable speed inverter mini-compressors to help provide them with a competitive advantage.

Mini Water Chiller

MOIR Compact Plate Cooling Unit

The benefits of Plate liquid chiller module include ultra small radiator and high heat flux. It provides excellent cooling performance and also allows the end user to adapt for ultimate flexibility.

  • Refrigerant : R-134a/ R290
  • Capacity: 100~600W adjustable
  • Rated Voltage: 24V/ 48V DC
  • Temperature Range: ±20℃ (-4~68℉)
  • Compressor: Twin-motor inverter
  • Dimension: 197 x 190 x 148mm
  •  Weight: 3.6kg (7.92lbs)
The mini cooling unit is a hermetically sealed refrigeration subsystem. It consists of a miniature variable speed dc compressor, condenser, evaporator, and drive board, capillary, and filter drier, fans, and other electrical parts.
The system is compact, lightweight and highly reliable that makes it well-suited for many portable applications. It is fully charged with natural R290 refrigerant and offers high heat transfer rates. The users can easily connect their coolant loop to the evaporator.

A quick glimpse of its feature highlights.

  • Compact:  Based on our own variable-speed, miniature compressors, we provide the smallest packaged cooling solutions with the highest capacity.
  • Powerful:  While our thermal units are small, often less than a shoebox, our cooling capacity is not. Powered by our compressor, our compact systems deliver capacity greater than system 10 times their size.
  •  Efficiency:  Moir’s mini chiller, with high efficient, twin-cylinder compressor, has demonstrated higher efficiency than any other compact thermal solution on the market
  •  Eco-friendly:  This small, robust and eco-friendly DC cooling unit applies natural R290 as a refrigerant, a non-toxic gas with zero ODP and very low GWP, has no impact the environment.

In today’s medical field, a variety of innovative devices and technologies are emerging.  Among them, the cold cap for hair preservation stands out by utilizing low-temperature technology.   In this domain, liquid cooling unit based on miniaturized vapor compression technology plays a crucial role.   Designed specifically to meet the miniaturization and efficient cooling requirements of medical cooling equipment, these units offer advantages such as compactness, lightweight, high efficiency, and stable operation. They provide a consistent and stable low-temperature environment, essential for the functioning of cold caps.

Scalp CoolingWith a long track history in developing micro refrigeration solutions, MOIR’s liquid cooling systems deliver excellent temperature stability and precision control in a small lightweight package. With our own high efficiency, variable speed, brushless DC motor miniature rotary compressor, our mini liquid cooling unit provides the smallest packaged cooling solution with the highest cooling capacity. While our thermal systems are small, often less than a shoebox, but they produce capacity greater than systems 10 times their size.

The compact, lightweight cooling units benefit both the patient and the clinic.  For cold cap therapy, the patient can easily use scalp cooling before, during, and after chemotherapy.  The portability of the compact cooling system ensures that practitioners free up the infusion chair immediately after treatment. Also, driven by the twin-cylinder configuration small compressor, the mini refrigerated system has twice the efficiency with reduced vibration for quieter operation, enhancing the patient’s comfort.
