Motor drive controller ( PCB – drive board)  is a device or group of device that are used to control the start, stop, and speed of an electric motor.  They can either be manually operated or programmed to work automatically, with possible functions including selecting the rotational direction and speed, regulating or limiting torque, and stopping or starting the motor. A motor controller helps to protect the motor itself from overloading or electrical faults.
 
MOIR is an expert offering a portfolio of motor drive board of innovative, high-performance and economical compact thermal solutions. All our products (mini rotary compressors, liquid chiller modules, DC condensing units, micro air coolers) will be shipped with our patented motor drive controller ( PCB drive board).  
 
MOIR’s drive board controller,  is a universal low noise sinusoidal, variable speed drive.  This allows the cooling capacity of the system to be regulated by increasing or decreasing the compressor speed.  The motor controller supports 3 different control methods: UART communication control, Potentiometer resistance control, PWM control.  The user can use one of these methods to control their refrigeration systems speed.
 
The  compressor controller adopts T1 DSP 280025 as drive chip and FOC (Field Oriented Control ) 180° control method.  The firmware has a minimum speed of 1800 RPM (condition-dependent) and a maximum speed of 6500 RPM. The compressor speed accuracy can control within ±10rpm, providing variable speed and load following capability for precise temperature control and high efficiency.  
 
Offered in 24V, 48V, and 220V voltage input options, MOIR’s drive board are used in various applications to control the speed of pumps, fans, blowers, machine tools, electric vehicles, etc.

Our inverter drive board is specially designed for controlling the mini rotary compressors in micro refrigeration systems.  It provides a compact and efficient solution for regulating the compressor’s speed and torue, ensuring stable and reliable operation.  Besides of that, the drive board is applicable for other systems or devices matching the same function. 
 
The drive board can be easily integrated into existing systems and devices, thanks to its simple and intuitive UART communication and PWM signal interface. In addition, the AC & DC motor controller features a wide operating temperature range of -20℃ to 55℃, making it suitable for use in a variety of environments. Its heat sink cooling design ensures that the drive board remains cool and operates efficiently, even under high-load conditions.

With controller speed variability, the compressor can effectively load match to smooth and easy temperature adjustment. Thanks to this configuration, it allows the end user to precisely control the refrigeration & air conditioning system to the desired temperature and decrease operating costs.
 
The motor drive come with clear instructions and are equipped with terminals that make wiring and configuration straightforward, making them easy to install and integrate into the systems. Additionally, the motor controller is designed in compact size and light weight. This helps reduce the overal weight and footprint of the system, making it more efficient and cost-effective. 

Motor Drive Controller Applications

At MOIR, we specialize in providing innovative and reliable compact cooling solutions tailored to customer’s specific needs, including mini DC compressors, mini chiller systems, and micro air conditioners. All of the products are shipped with the drive board, allowing it to adjust the compressor speed to regulate the cooling capacity of the system. The drive board is variable frequency sine wave designed, providing load following capability for precise temperature control and high efficiency.

Motor controllers are used with both direct current and alternating current motors. A controller includes means to connect the motor to the electrical power supply, and may also include overload protection for the motor, and over-current protection for the motor and wiring. A motor controller may also supervise the motor’s field circuit, or detect conditions such as low supply voltage, incorrect polarity or incorrect phase sequence, or high motor temperature. Some motor controllers limit the inrush starting current, allowing the motor to accelerate itself and connect mechanical load more slowly than a direct connection. Motor controllers may be manual, requiring an operator to sequence a starting switch through steps to accelerate the load, or may be fully automatic, using internal timers or current sensors to accelerate the motor.

Besides controlling the compressor of the cooling systems, the drive board controllers are designed to be versatile and compatible with a wide range of motors and systems. They can be configured to work with types of motors, including AC motors, and DC motors. Additionally, the controllers for electric motors are able to adjust the control algorithms, set speed, and configure communication protocols. How the Drive Board Controlls the Compressor?

The motor drive controller is a crucial component in a wide range of applications, such as industrial automation, new energy vehicles, home appliances, LCD monitors, consumer electronics, etc, where it plays a pivotal role in regulating the operation of the drive motor.

No matter you’re looking for small DC compressors only, integrated cooling systems from us, or you’re expecting an entirely new solution from scratch, the electrical drive board will be packed together to you for driving the compressor.

The motor drive controller works by converting input power into a controlled electrical signal that drives the mini compressor or other equipment. It uses the TI DSP280025 drive chip and FOC control method to accurately regulate the compressor’s speed and torque.

Coupled with the programmable main controller (developed by OEM engineer and integrator), the motor drive board also monitors the compressor’s operating conditions and activates protection functions if any abnormalities are detected. For example, if the input voltage exceeds a safe level, the overvoltage protection function will activate, shutting down the compressor to prevent damage. Similarly, if the compressor stalls or fails to start, the stall protection function will activate, ensuring the compressor does not continue to operate in an unsafe state.

  • UART Communication: Used for communication between the compressor communication board and the control board
  • Compressor resistance debugging: (reserved):Utilize 51KΩ for regulating the compressor operating speed.
  • Switching signal: For potentiometer speed control, disconnect to turn off the compressor, short circuit to enable the compressor
  • Temperature Sensor: The discharge temperature sensor detects the compressor discharge temperature. 
  • Chip programming: Simulation and program solidification of chips
  • Positive pole(V+): Connect the positive pole of the power supply.
  • Negative pole (V-): Connect the negative pole of the power supply.
  • Compressor output interface: Connect the U, V, W phase of the compressor
  • Fan drive interface: Control the DC fan on/off.

MOIR’s micro-refrigeration solutions are based on advanced inverter tech, hence, the drive board developed also supports URAT communication with other components of the devices, such as sensors and controllers, to provide feedback and adjust operation based on real-time conditions.  
About our drive board, it is engineered with 3 available methods for the compressor speed control: Potentiometer speed control, PWM speed control, and UART communication speed control.
 
Among them, the option suggested is Communication speed control > PWM speed control > Potentiometer resistance speed control. 

 For the potentiometer interface, it can be through resistance speed regulation, not supporting the analog voltage signal yet.   To achieve this, a modification would need to be made.

For UART communication, the length of the cables suggested would not be exceed 10 meters
For RS485, the length of the cables can be reached to 100 meters.
 
At MOIR, we offers both the UART and RS485 option for selection to meet your specific needs. 

 The maximum cable length connecting the drive board and compressor can be up to 650mm.  Typically it is  enough for most of your electrical connection.

MOIR’s compressor is a kind of variable speed, 3-phase inverter compressor.  The drive board is designed with 3 interfaces ( U phase, V phase, W phase) for connecting the compressor.
 
The driver can be connected to the compressor by a special 3-wiring cable with White, Red and Black wires. The white wire is connected to port U phase; the red wire is connected to port V phase; and the black wire is connected to port W phase.
 
The other end of the 3-wiring cables is for connecting the compressor output interfaces. For compressor connection, the wiring as long as in accordance with the U, V, W clockwise is feasible, no need to connect one by one respectively.
